Modem stands for MODulator dEModulator.  It converts analog signal from the phone lines so that the computer can understand it and back to analog when it's finished using it to send it back.  With the advent and ongoing attempts to saturate the market with high-speed internet, the modem is more often relegated to the use of fax machine or voice answering duties.
